There is potential to work towards building insurance populations for the bochariensus and arkal subspecies within EAZA. To improve the feasibility of realising this, priority lies with improving pedigree information and knowing the genetic background of both subspecies within EAZA.Potentially there may be animals held outside of EAZA that can contribute to the genetic diversity of the arkal population. 
 
 
 

Programme numbers

In November 2020, the Urial EEP (Ovis orientalis arkal) had 77 animals in 5 institutions and the Ovis orientalis bochariensis had 32 animals in 5 institutions.

Programme highlights

  • The EAZA Caprinae TAG has a very active Facebook page where they regularly publish news stories about the species under the remit of the TAG.
  • The IUCN Caprinae Specialist Group publishes an annual newspaper which can be found here. 
  • In Zooquaria issue 111 (Spring 2021) on page 14 there is an article about the Caprinae RCP.
  • EAZA published its 2021 Annual TAG Report.
