The Scops owl EEP has four species under its remit: Luzon scops owl (Otus megalotis), Sunda scops owl (Otus lempiji), Indian scops owl (Otus bakkamoena),  Eurasian scops owl (Otus scops). These species will be used as a model species to gain knowledge and experience with keeping them in human care which can then be used to write Best Practise Guidelines and potentially this knowledge and experience can be used in the future for other endangered species of Scops owl.

Programme numbers

In March 2023, the Scops owls EEP had 212 animals in 40 institutions.

Programme highlights

  • In Zooquaria 112 (summer 2021) on page 14 there is an article on the Raptor TAG – subgroup Owls Regional Collection Plan and the plans for the exceptional birds.
  • The EAZA Raptor TAG is very active on Facebook with an open Facebook page where they regularly publish news stories. There is also a closed group that is open to EAZA members.
