August 2026 Conservation Snapshot

Behind every conservation figure is a story: a species protected, a field partner supported, a habitat restored, or expertise shared across borders. The EAZA Conservation Database helps get an insight into these stories. By recording financial support and staff time from EAZA Members, the database gives us a clearer picture of the conservation work happening across the community and around the world. It shows where Members are active, which species, habitats and regions are being supported, and how zoos and aquariums are contributing to conservation close by and far beyond their own gates.

This information is also the engine behind EAZA’s Conservation Snapshots, which are featured as news items on eaza.net almost every month. Each Snapshot turns database entries into a short, accessible story about Member support for a species group, project or conservation theme. Recent examples include the July 2025 Snapshot on antelope conservation, which showed how 40 EAZA Members and partners supported antelope conservation over the course of five years, and the April 2026 Snapshot on canids and hyaenids, highlighting support from 24 EAZA Members for conservation activities linked to painted dogs, wolves, foxes, dholes, maned wolves and striped hyaenas.

Together, these Snapshots help make the scale and diversity of EAZA Member conservation support more visible. The database allows us to spot patterns, recognise strong areas of activity, and better understand the many ways Members contribute and the long-term partnerships that have been established. This picture is still growing, as more and more EAZA Members add details about their conservation activities and help fill in the wider story.

The accompanying infographic is one of the ways we try to bring this collective picture to life. They turn several years of information into clear visuals that are easy to share, discuss and celebrate. Most importantly, they remind us why continued and accurate reporting in the EAZA Conservation Database matters. Every entry helps EAZA represent the community more strongly, celebrate Member contributions more visibly, and show how progressive zoos and aquariums are working together to support conservation.
