Who? Marcus Clauss, Veterinarian at the Clinic for Zoo Animals, Exotic Pets and Wildlife (Switzerland), is the Vice Chair of the EAZA Research Committee and Nutrition Working Group, and holds advisory roles for several EAZA TAGs.
What? Manipulating animal reproduction is often taken for granted and reproductive activity is sometimes even excluded from welfare assessments. This actually bespeaks a specific approach to animal welfare. Marcus argues that welfare must be considered within the framework of the reason for keeping a type of animal, and not as an absolute standard. He claims that excluding management euthanasia for population management, combined with restricting reproduction as a matter of course - derived from companion animal husbandry - endangers the viability of zoo populations yet at the same time puts dire constrains on zoo animal welfare.
