What are the EEP roles?

InsuranceThis role includes the establishment of a long-term ex situ population as a means of preserving options for future conservation efforts. The aim is to create a potential source population for demographic and genetic supplementation in the event of a decline in the wild population. However, there is a need to increment the number of holders due to potential space constraints.

FundraisingWhile the benefit of fundraising for the Yellow-shouldered Amazon may not be as high compared to other species, it still plays a crucial role in generating support and resources for conservation initiatives.
Capacity buildingThis role aims to develop Best Practice Guidelines and share them with in situ partners working with the Yellow-shouldered Amazon. This collaboration seeks to enhance conservation efforts and build capacity among stakeholders.
Conservation educationThis education role for the Yellow-shouldered Amazon focuses on establishing political links and advocacy, particularly targeting EU voters. This aims to raise awareness about the conservation needs of the species and garner support for its protection and recovery.

Programme highlights

  1. Strong connections have already been established with Ex-situ partners working with the species.
  2. In 2024 birds from a confiscation have been released on Aruba where the species was extinct since 1947. Future releases from EEP birds might be possible to boost the wild population on Aruba, this is work in progress. A partnership with ACF (Aruba Conservation Foundation) is therefore established for the Lora Project. This project also focuses on habitat restauration, advocacy and education.
