What are the EEP roles?

InsuranceThis role includes the establishment of a long-term ex situ population as a means of preserving options for future conservation efforts. The aim is to create a potential source population for demographic and genetic supplementation in the event of a decline in the wild population. It is crucial to increase the number of hatchlings and establish collaborations with South American institutions such as Parques des Aves and Sao Paolo to enhance genetic diversity and maintain a viable population.

Research (various): Research efforts will focus on exploring the use of artificial nest boxes, studying reproductive biology, and potentially involving other Amazon species. By conducting research both in captivity and in the wild, valuable insights can be gained to inform conservation strategies and enhance the understanding of this species.
FundraisingFundraising initiatives will primarily target local non-governmental organizations (NGOs). By promoting the conservation of Red-tailed Amazons and their habitat as a means of sustainable development, it is possible to generate support and resources for conservation efforts.
Conservation educationThe Red-tailed Amazon can serve as an ambassador species for the Mata Atlantica ecosystem. Educational materials and programs will be developed to raise awareness among zoo visitors about the importance of conserving this unique species and its habitat.
Model (for virus management)This role involves examining the effectiveness of protocols and strategies developed by the TAG for virus management. While feasibility may be challenging due to the difficulties in securing zoo participation, the Red-tailed Amazon can provide valuable insights into virus management for Amazon species.
