• Population restoration The wild Swedish population of Lesser White-fronted geese is small and therefore likely to decrease over time without the release of birds from the EEP. Releases of captive bred Lesser white-fronted geese therefore occurs annually to the Swedish mountains. The Lesser White-fronted Goose project is owned by the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management (SAHWM), but is a collaboration with Nordens Ark and the ornithological association of Norrbotten. • Insurance With careful management, the Swedish ex situ sub-population can remain demographically stable and genetically healthy to keep providing birds for releases and act as a back-up population in case the situation deteriorates in the wild again. • Conservation education (in range) Keeping the species in EAZA institutions provides the opportunity to put some emphasis about the status of the Lesser white- fronted goose as well as increasing awareness about the situation in the wild and the ongoing conservation efforts. |
