Programme roles

Direct Conservation icon  Insurance
The wild population of Hartmann’s zebra is continuously threatened by droughts, which can wipe out large parts of the population at once. The EEP population will be managed as an insurance population with the aim to grow the population in numbers and holders

Indirect Conservation icon  Research (veterinary)
Both Sarcoid and Equine Herpes Virus occur in the in situ and ex situ populations. Within the EEP programme, veterinary research will be supported to help with the development of vaccines where possible.

Non Conservation icon  Education
Among visitors there is a lack of awareness about how different zebra species differ in their needs, behaviour and social structure from other zebra species. Additionally, it is important to educate visitors about the threats that zebras face.
