• Insurance population The ex situ population is a potential future source to build up (long‐term) populations for reintroduction in Madagascar. • Source The ex situ population provides the opportunity to collaborate with Madagascar on gaining knowledge practice of release for reintroduction. • Ex situ research/training (in and outside range) The ex situ population can be utilised to gain expertise on optimal husbandry and welfare and to what extent captive-born animals learn from wild-born animals. The research may also increase understanding of the species in the wild and its conservation. • Conservation education (outside range) Having the species in EAZA collections provides a potential opportunity to educate visitors about the threats lemur species are facing in Madagascar. |
