Programme roles

Direct Conservation icon Insurance population
The ex situ population is a potential future source to build up (long‐term) populations for reintroduction in Madagascar.

Source
The ex situ population provides the opportunity to collaborate with Madagascar on gaining knowledge practice of release for reintroduction.

Ex situ research/training (in and outside range)
The ex situ population can be utilised to gain expertise on optimal husbandry and welfare and to what extent captive-born animals learn from wild-born animals. The research may also increase understanding of the species in the wild and its conservation.

• Conservation education (outside range)
Having the species in EAZA collections provides a potential opportunity to educate visitors about the threats lemur species are facing in Madagascar.

Indirect Conservation icon Fundraising
Providing financial support to in situ projects.
