The EAZA Education Conference is a biennial event hosted by a different institution each time. It brings together educators from across Europe and beyond for three days of presentations, workshops, and activities focused on sharing good practice and highlighting future trends in zoo and aquarium education. Regularly attracting 150-180 delegates, the EAZA Education Conference provides invaluable opportunities for educators to connect with each other and share their experiences.
The EAZA Education Conference 2019 is hosted by Stockholm Zoo (Skansen Foundation) and we are looking forward to welcoming you all in the beautiful city of Stockholm! Skansen Zoo is part of the Skansen Open-Air Museum, which is located on the island of Djurgården, a popular recreation area in Stockholm.
Optional pre- and post-conference tours (in some cases at no cost) to Järvzoo, the VASA museum and other places of interest in Stockholm and Sweden will be added to this website soon. Kolmården, Furuvik and Parken Zoo are closed in March, these zoos however are willing to open their doors for EZE Delegates on Friday 29 March. If you plan on visiting one of these zoos please send an e-mail to Mirko Marseille. Travel expenses to these locations are at own cost. More information will follow.

Kolmården Zoo is cordially inviting EEC delegates to visit their zoo on Friday 29 March. Kolmården Zoo will sponsor all costs including transport, lunches and guided tours in the park.
The coach (57 seats max) will leave at 09:30 from Chapman, it takes approximately 2 hours to get to Kolmården, participants will be back in Stockholm no later than 5pm.

A continuing challenge for EAZA zoos and aquariums is how to effectively evaluate and measure the effects of their conservation education programmes. This topic is widely acknowledged by the EAZA community as an important aspect of any zoo or aquarium’s remit, and there are now four EAZA Conservation Education Standards (CES) which specifically focus on this research and evaluation topic. However, feedback from EAZA members shows that they feel there are several challenges that prevent them from maximising the potential of social research and evaluation as part of their zoo or aquarium’s conservation education.
The pre-conference EAZA Academy course (25 March) 'Embedding social research and evaluation into conservation education programmes at zoos and aquariums' aims to take on these challenges from a new perspective, and provide educators with new ideas and skills to help them meet the standards.

The course will be at the Skånska Gruvan building, in the main hall. The cost of attendance is €125 for EAZA members, and for non-members €160. You can register for the course through this link - it's possible to register for the course only if you wish.
The conference theme 'Conservation Education – Acting for a sustainable future' reflects the important role conservation education in EAZA zoos and aquariums plays in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This role includes how we encourage, support and empower our audiences to take positive personal, community and wider social actions towards the animals and the natural world.
We want this conference to highlight the best conservation education taking place in EAZA zoos and aquariums, but we also want to take a future focus to help shape our conservation education programmes to meet the current and future conservation and social challenges. The themes of this conference reflect a celebration of the diversity of activities in our membership throughout the 47 countries in EAZA, but also focuses on some of the hot topics and challenges facing conservation education in EAZA zoos and aquariums over the next decade.

For this conference we welcome abstract submissions for the following categories:
We welcome submissions covering work carried out directly within a zoo or aquarium, but also representing the broader scope of conservation education such as outreach work, in situ projects, or online programmes.
We are also asking all authors to identify which EAZA Conservation Education Standard(s) link most closely to their presentation: e.g. an abstract about evaluating the success of your volunteer programme would be linked to standard 18: The zoo must evaluate its conservation education programmes using appropriate methods.

In this theme we want to showcase how conservation education is an important aspect in sustainable development, and how EAZA zoos and aquariums should work in the future to collectively contribute to meeting the UN sustainable development goals. Some examples of the presentations we would like to see include; Is your zoo or aquarium using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a key framework to how it operates, have you run a programme that links specifically to one or more of the goals or have you got a great idea of how to bring the goals to life and make them relevant to zoo audiences.
In this topic we are interested in presentations and workshops that demonstrate how you have met one or more of the EAZA Conservation Education Standards. For example, have you implemented a new conservation education plan, do you have a new exhibit with education fully integrated into the design, has your zoo recently gone through an EAZA screening using the new screening questions? What were your experiences and what advice can you give to the other zoos and aquariums who will go through a similar process in the next few years.
This draws on the Swedish Grön omsorg (Green care) approach and in this theme, we are looking for programmes and partnerships that use our zoos and aquariums, nature and natural environments to provide physical, mental, social and/or educational benefits for different, and often under-represented audiences to zoos and aquariums.

One of the ongoing challenges for zoos and aquariums is how to engage our audiences with often difficult and complex topics. In this theme, we want to hear about your methods of conservation storytelling about:
Conservation education has traditionally been a job as educators and the zoo’s education department, but that is changing. Every person who works in a zoo and aquarium has the potential to connect with our audiences and be a conservation educator! We want to hear about conservation programmes that involve the wider zoo staff from keepers to cleaners. How have you have built opportunities, skills and confidence in other zoo staff to support a whole zoo approach to conservation education.
In this theme we are looking for examples of how you have designed social research and evaluation tools, collected data and evidence or measured the changes and effects in your audiences because of your conservation education programmes.
This theme is a chance for you to show case what activities, events and evaluations your zoo or aquarium has undertaken as part of the current EAZA Conservation campaign. What lessons have your learnt, what didn’t go quite how you expected, did you work with an unusual audience and what tips would you give other zoos on how to make the most of this campaign for the rest of 2019
Have you got an idea for innovative talk that doesn’t fit in to any of our conference themes - then submit it to this ‘wildcard’ theme!
Make sure that you reserve your accommodation as soon as possible. There are limited options on the island of Djurgården itself.

This is another option which is close to the zoo, room prices however are higher and there is no offered discount rate for EEC delegates.
We highly recommend the STF hotel Chapman & Skeppsholmen to all delegates: it's relatively cheap, close to the venue and beautifully located on nearby Skeppsholmen island.

A reservation can be made on the STF Stockholm af Chapman/Skeppsholmen site. Use the campaign code EAZA to retrieve a discount of 10%. This discount is only valid for the time of the conference, and for all forms of accommodation at Chapman/Skeppsholmen. You can chose to pay a deposit of 10% of the total amount when confirming the reservation, the remaining amount must be paid for at least 30 days prior to the check-in date. The entire reservation fee is refundable if cancellation is made before 6 PM the day prior to arrival.
Click here for more information about how to get to Chapman/Skepssholmen. To get to the conference venue it's advised to take the ferry. You can however always travel to the hostel by other public transport (tram, metro, bus) and then cross the bridge to the hostel on foot.
You can also find hotels in the old town area (Gamla Stan) and Skeppsbron area, which are both conveniently located for ferry access. Hotels in the Östermalm area offer access by bus, tram or walking.
Many hostels in Stockholm also offer private rooms which can be a more affordable choice:
It is highly recommended to purchase a SL travelcard at the airport. There is a fee for passing to and from Arlanda Airport with the commuter train (NOT Arlanda Express!). If you have a valid travelcard (SL ticket) you just pay the passage supplement fee, SEK 120 (€12). The passage ticket can be bought at SkyCity, between terminal 4 and 5 before entering the commuter train platform.
With the SL Travelcard, you can use public transport as much as you like during the whole conference week ( 7 days). Travelcards can be used on buses, commuter train, subway, as well as tram 7 which goes to Skansen and the island of Djurgården. The Travelcard can also be used for the ferry services between Slussen (Youth Hostel location) and Djurgården (Conference venue).
You pay 325 SEK (€32) for the SL Travelcard plus a supplemental fee of 20 SEK (€2) for the SL Access card (valid for 7 days).
