 Money issues

Are Euros accepted in Croatia?

The Croatian currency is the Kuna (KN) (not the Euro!), which is divided into 100 lipas. Euro is NOT an official currency and NO business/individual is required to accept them as payment. You may well find that prices in some accommodation places, restaurants and elsewhere are quoted in Euros. This is purely because so many visitors to Croatia are from Euro-using countries, and some business owners display Euro prices to make it easier for them.

Currencies to take with you and changing money in Croatia

We recommend to take Euros with you to Croatia – it is easy to exchange Kunas anywhere in Croatia

Paying by debit and credit cards

Debit and credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants. Smaller restaurants, shops and private-accommodation owners in almost all cases, do not have the infrastructure to accept cards; they must be paid in cash. In larger shops (supermarkets, drugstores/pharmacies, souvenir shops) cards are readily accepted.

It’s therefore always a good idea to have some cash to hand! ATMs are widely available.

Tipping

Tipping in Croatia is purely discretionary and is generally only done in restaurants and cafe-bars. Restaurants: Up to 10% but only for good service; leave nothing if you're dissatisfied in any way. Leave your tip in cash, even if you're paying by credit card. Cafes & bars:  Round up to the nearest round figure.
