Shellshock Special Awards
Shellshock was not only about successful fundraising. Therefore four special awards were handed out at the official Shellshock closing session in Bath.
- Shellshock Education Award - Chester
The Education Award was awarded to Chester Zoo for their original school and public education programme. The programme is based on the story of the Yunnan box turtle (Cuora yunnanensis), which was thought to be extinct but recently rediscovered. The cartoon-style programme introduces the turtle and tortoise crisis in a fascinating and teachable way using a true-life story.
- Shellshock Enclosure Award - Fuengirola
Fuengirola received the Enclosure Award for the development of the most remarkable new turtle or tortoise enclosure during the Campaign year. The new enclosure for the Giant Asian pond turtle (Heosemys grandis) shows the animals in highly naturalistic surroundings and has beautiful underwater viewing of the animals. Furthermore, the enclosure has already proved to be successful by the breeding results of the inhabitants.
- Shellshock Captive-breeding Award - Münster
The Captive breeding Award was handed out to Münster Zoo for the successful breeding of the Vietnamese flowerback box turtle (Cuora galbinifrons). This has been the first successful breeding of this Critically Endangered, Shellshock Red Alert species in captivity in Europe.
- Shellshock Fundraising Award - Newquay
Newquay Zoo received the Fundraising Award for their original 100-mile walk. The 100-mile sponsored walk from Paignton to Newquay was made by zoo staff. This event qualified for the Fundraising Award not only for the effort put into it by the staff, but also for taking the Shellshock Campaign out of the Zoo into south-west England.
