ActivitiesColchester Zoo’s Shellshock Campaign helps turtles in GabonThe money raised from Colchester Zoo’s successful Shellshock campaign is currently being distributed to conservation projects all over the world and the most recent donation of funds has gone to The Leatherback Ocean Wanderer (LOW) project in Gabon. €20,000 was allocated to the project to support their work with leatherback turtles that nest on the beaches of Gabon. This donation has enabled four female turtles to be fitted with satellite trackers. The data from the satellite trackers is collected on the internet and used to follow the animals’ journey through the Atlantic Ocean after they have left the beaches. It is hoped that this project will uncover the migratory secrets of the turtles and provide the basis for efforts to safeguard them. The Marine Turtle Research Group has offered zoos who raised funds the opportunity to submit ideas for names of the four turtles that have been fitted with the satellites. If you would like to submit an idea for a name for one of the female turtles then contact Colchester Zoo’s conservation department on Rebecca.perry@colchester-zoo.co.uk with your ideas by Monday 27th March. The turtles can be followed on the internet by visiting www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=104
