ActivitiesColchester Zoo launches Shellshock campaign
Press releaseOn 20th October, Colchester Zoo is to launch its fourth major annual conservation campaign. The Shellshock Campaign is being headed by EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and is an extensive fundraising and educational project to conserve Turtles and Tortoises. Colchester Zoo aims to raise UKŁ20,000 (€29,335) over the year and collect 25,000 signatures in support of the campaign to rescue Turtles and Tortoises from extinction. Nearly half of the world's Turtle and Tortoise species are now threatened with extinction due to the Asian turtle trade, the pet trade, and a host of other threats. Colchester Zoo's fundraising is earmarked for "Traffic" a joint programme of WWF and IUCN to help tackle directly the turtle and tortoise trade in Southeast Asia. Colchester Zoo will be running a programme of educational activities throughout the year as well as host special events to raise funds. Visitors can expect to see displays throughout the Zoo from this half term; to spread awareness and raise funds. The support of the people of Colchester is needed and proceeds from additional activities for Shellshock will go directly towards the campaign fund. A fundraising pack is now available for any schools, individuals or organisations who wish to help with the fundraising.
