Shellshock in Riga Zoo
In 2005 Riga Zoo has carried out the following Shellshock activities:1) The 2005 calendar of Riga zoo introduces the visitors with endangered turtles;
2) In February the 'Month of the Tropics' was organised in the zoo's tropical house, with special emphasis on turtles. For this occasion a poster on Shellshock was created;
3) In June 5,000 leaflets "How the turtle soup is made" were given to the representatives of the Association of Tourist Agencies.
Aims - to informthe Latvian tourists travelling abroad and discourage them from the purchase of souvenirs as well as meals made from turtles;
4) In August 10,000 leaflets 'The turtles in Latvia' were printed. A press conference on European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis) in Latvia was organized. Aims - to inform the public and try to collect information on the distribution of European pond turtles in Latvia;
5) Earlier in the summer an exhibit for Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) was opened. Aims - to inform and educate the visitors not to release Red-eared sliders into wild.
