Special emphasis on highly endangered native species
The Shellshock Campaign in Lodz Zoo was launched in April 2005 in the Vivarium House in which a collection of reptiles and amphibians is presented to the public. In this vivarium, the visitors can also see three species of turtles confiscated in Hong Kong in December 2001 and then moved to Lodz in January 2002: Cuora amboinensis, Heosemys grandis and Siebenrockiella crassicollis.

There have been a lot of presentations in the Vivarium telling visitors, among them many schoolchildren, of the dramatic situation of this group of reptiles in the whole world. A special emphasis is on the only native species Emys orbicularis, which is highly endangered in Poland. This species has bred twice in our zoo in the last two years, and visitors can watch the young in a special exhibition in our Aquarium.

Press releases devoted to the EAZA Shellshock Campaign have been published in local newspapers. Additionally, young children who visit our children zoo, have the possibility to touch the turtles under supervision of our educational staff. This is the easiest way of telling children of the turtle crisis in the wild.
