EAZA Turtle and Tortoise Campaign in Zoo de Doué-la-Fontaine

As for each EAZA annual campaign, we have naturally decided to participate in the EAZA Turtle and Tortoise Campaign in Zoo de Doué-la-Fontaine, France. To reach the objectives defined by the campaign planning group, we developed several activities.
First, to follow the mission 'promote and support further EAZA institution participation in Turtle Arks', we welcomed a couple of the giant asian pond turtle (Hoesemys grandis) to participate in the ESB programme for this species.
The second goal is dedicated to raise awareness about the conservation and welfare crisis that these reptiles currently face. In order to do so, an exhibition was dedicated to the current status of tortoises and turtles. This exhibition informes the public about: biology and ecology of these animals, their diversity, their threats (international threats and French threats like pet trade and invasive species) and the solution to preserve them. Each day, a special meeting provided by our animators allows the public to know more about the turtles and tortoises.
We organised a special day to raise funds and to accentuate the awareness. Meetings with professional people and games were organised. All the kids were painted as a turtle or a tortoise...
Finally, to raise funds, campaign T-shirts are sold in our shop. A part of the funds collected through the sales of turtles and tortoise wood sculptures we sold in our shop is dedicated to the campaign. We also organise a game throughout the year: for 2 euros, people can estimate the weight of a big tortoise's sculpture and try to win it.
