EAZA Tiger Campaign 2002/4
Campaign efforts in Kyiv
Newborn tigers at Kyiv boost campaign activities
The EAZA Tiger Campaign team at Kyiv Zoo met for the first time in April 2003. It was decided to start large-scale operations in Kyiv Zoo on 28 and 29 June with Tiger Days. The most active promoters were the students of the Forest Department of the National Agricultural Academy, and their nice green uniforms attracted a lot of visitors. The press release and posters providing information about Tiger Days were distributed throughout the city and to the mass media. A large poster near the main entrance informed visitors about the participation of Kyiv Zoo in the EAZA Tiger Campaign. Tiger footprints painted on zoo tracks lead visitors from the central gates to our tiger enclosures and further on to the fundraising box.
During the Tiger Days each adult visitor received a leaflet with information on tiger biology, status and conservation, as well as a note how they can help to save tigers. Each child received a balloon with the logo of 21st Century Tiger Fund on one side, and the words: ‘Tiger Day in Kyiv Zoo' on the other side. The educational department organised tiger-themed quizzes three times per day for our youngest visitors and competitions with presentation of prices from our sponsors.
Tiger Campaign fundraising boxes were installed before the official start of the campaign in Kyiv Zoo - from 15 May onwards. In August, we were already half way to our fundraising goal. One of our tigers is pregnant and can give birth any day now. That is why we are planning the peak of our activities for September, when we will be able to introduce newborns to the public, and participate in the Russian Tiger and Leopard Day with a live contribution to the EAZA tiger population.
