EAZA Tiger Campaign 2002/4
Campaign efforts in Banham Zoo
The EAZA Tiger campaign was a perfect choice for Banham Zoo as we not only care for two adult Siberian tigers but in September 2002 we were thrilled when our tigers produced two cubs, Zascha and Chali. This was the perfect PR opportunity to put weight behind our fundraising attempts and to create public awareness of the importance of breeding programmes.
The official launch of the Banham Zoo Tiger campaign began during the school half-term vacation in February 2003, and we received excellent radio and TV coverage.
The Education team is leading the campaign and has created some fantastic displays including an amazing 3D tiger head money box.
Campaign activities include tiger trails and tiger information packs, face painting, badge design and art and craft sessions. The clay modelling is incredibly popular although incredibly messy! We also launched our new 'Animal Art' competition that encourages children of all ages to get artistic. An exhibition of work will be displayed in September and prizes will be awarded to the winners. Our usual tiger feeding talk has been adapted to include the campaign and there are many children wandering about the zoo in customized make-your-own tiger ears.
The EAZA Tiger Campaign contains a conservation message close to our hearts. We hope that through the campaign, European zoos can make a significant difference to the plight of tigers in the wild.
