SAFARI BEEKSE BERGEN, NETHERLANDS
Building "Green Bridges" at Safari Beekse BergenIn order to bring the EAZA Mata Atlântica Campaign under their visitors' attention, a symbolic corridor was built at Safari Beekse Bergen. The method was simple, clear and very effective: an average fundraising of 145 Euro a day. A few toy monkeys are placed two trees standing at a distance of approximately 30 meters. Both trees had a simple sign, saying:
"Help us to get together". The visitors were able to help the monkeys by building symbolic trees in between. This was done by piling discs, cut from trunks. Visitors could buy a disc for two Euro. Each disc had a hole, allowing it to be placed over an iron pipe and a label for the visitors to write their names or a short message. Thus, a pile of two meters high forms a symbolic tree with the names and messages of the constructors. Step by step this corridor of symbolic trees connects the two natural trees with the monkeys.
An active approach was needed to build the first trees; volunteers brought the information panels under the visitors' attention, gave additional information and asked for their help to build the corridor. At a certain moment, the view of the piles was so much eye catching, that the opposite happened: the visitors stepped towards the volunteers to ask what on earth they were doing! A few words explained it all. As a result Hilvarenbeek has become one of the most successful fundraisers of this campaign.
For Safari Beekse Bergen this approach has pointed out two important facts. First of all, zoo visitors are interested in contributing to nature conservation, they just need to be informed how. And secondly, the help of volunteers is invaluable for initiatives like this. | ||||||||||||||
