EAZA Bushmeat Campaign

Introduction

EAZA launched its first conservation campaign, the EAZA Bushmeat Campaign in 2000. The campaign included public awareness activities and fundraising. Most importantly however, a petition with demands directed at African and European leaders was developed to be signed by concerned zoo visitors.

The campaign was designed to involve the millions of people that visit the EAZA zoos and aquaria each year. Some 149 member zoos in 25 countries participated in the campaign which led to a tremendous logistical task in which translation of documents, transportation of hundreds of kilos of petitions and thousands of messages for coordination were involved. On the side of the participating zoos, hundreds of zoo staff members contributed in time, energy and funds to the campaign.
