EAZA Bushmeat Campaign

The way forward

Although the EAZA Bushmeat Campaign was officially closed during the EAZA Annual General meeting in Prague on 23 September 2001, much work still needs to be done.
The Bushmeat Steering Committee will keep up the pressure in an attempt to convince EU politicians and other important decision-makers to help resolve the bushmeat crisis.

In the meantime, the EU Petitions Committee has commissioned its report on the bushmeat trade and this is likely to be discussed at its meeting in September 2003 and will then be discussed at Plenary in the Parliament towards the end of the year. It is important that EAZA continues to be an active player in this process that we started three years ago, and that we are part of a wider European Bushmeat Campaign.

Partnership of concerned organisations

Since EAZA cannot overcome the threat of the bushmeat trade alone, EAZA's Council agreed that EAZA should become a participating partner in a new initiative. This initiative is the European Bushmeat Campaign, which is a partnership of concerned organisations. The partnership will fund an office and a full-time campaign director, who will be responsible for lobbying national and EU Governments, for facilitating communication between the various groups working on the bushmeat trade and for developing a
coordinated strategy.

Late 2002, all EAZA members have received a
request to consider providing EAZA with a
contribution to help fund EAZA's participation
in the European Bushmeat Campaign. Once
EAZA has committed itself to join, we will
be represented on the Steering Committee
of the Campaign by Bryan Carroll.
