Frog Day at Zoo Zlin
One of Zoo Zlín's top activities for the EAZA Amphibian Campaign was the so called 'Frog Day', which took place on Sunday 1 June 2008. On this day, children from 11 elementary schools from the Zlín region literally flooded the Zoo and prepared zoo visitor workshops, contests, theater and dance performances and also theoretical projects. All with the theme 'Amphibian Alarm!'.
Our Zoo started the entire project at the beginning of the year, when we sent the information material about the campaign to sixty elementary schools. We also introduced the Frog Day Project. Our intention was that each participating school familiarised the zoo visitors (both the young and adult ones) with the causes of the decline and threats of the amphibians in its 'own' way. The six topics were copied from our colleagues at Prague Zoo:
1. Frog sport
2. Kiss your frog, or else do we want a prince?
3. Frog chorus
4. Make your own amphibian
5. Fascinating transformation
6. Engagement dances

Frog Day was the peak of several months of preparation for each school group. Whether only a few pupils from the ecology class were involved or the entire school (they had frogs literally everywhere!), the results were unique. 220 pupils from 11 schools participated actively and directly at the Zoo. The entire day was under their direction and Zoo Zlín became, for them, a unique stage where they could raise awareness for the preservation of amphibians. And we have to say, they did that successfully.
Obtaining funds was not our goal, we focused on providing information. 6,147 visitors visited us on Frog Day. Many of them took home self-made amphibians, various souvenirs or memories from the theater performances. Also, the representatives of the participating schools were very happy. According to them, it was, for children, a new and very interesting method of acquiring and also handing over information.
Besides the Frog Day, for the general public we have also prepared for example, a photo contest called 'Take a picture of a frog', a terrain walk in the Bezedník Natural Reserve (where there are 13 kinds of amphibians) and eight educational panels informing our visitors about the difficult situation of amphibians.
