 Miss Austria for frogs
At the Vienna City Marathon on 27 April 2008, Vienna Zoo's running team supported frogs, toads, salamanders and newts - with the help of the top athlete and new Miss Austria, Marina Schneider (picture right).
Two sponsors, the baker's shop Felber and the sport drink CYL (Change Your Life), paid the team ten euro each for every kilometre they ran. A total of €3,500 was already raised this way. The money will be used to support the EAZA Year of the Frog Campaign.
The amphibian crisis is alarming: more than 120 amphibian species disappeared for ever in recent history! In total, almost half of the earth's frogs, salamanders and newts are threatened with extinction. The zoo team is very diverse: it consists of nurses, zoologists, workers of the zoo school, veterinary surgeons, employees of the zoo catering; supported by the 18-year old Miss Austria from Tirol. Also concerned about the amphibians were Wolfgang Konrad, who paid the starting fee for all runners, and Intersport Eybl, that sponsored the t-Shirts.
