Dutch zoos organise 'Frog cross' (Press release)
Run, ride, canoe and swim for frogs
A sponsored run organised by the Dutch zoo association raised €57.466! As result of an infectious and aggressive fungus, 120 amphibian species have gone extinct all over the world. Over 200 staff members of 15 Dutch zoos participated in the kikkercross (frogcross), a sponsored run to support frogs, on 21 June 2008.

    Amphibian crisis
By organising the frogcross the zoos, all members of the Dutch zoo association, have raised a significant amount of money. This money will amongst others be used to create frog breeding stations in zoos. These so-called bio-secure stations will be used to breed critically endangered species. As soon as the original habitat is "fungus-free" animals can be reintroduced from these reserve populations. Frogs play an essential role in their ecosystems; they serve as food for other species and at the same time keep insect populations under control by eating them.

    Frogcross
With their own zoo as starting point, the zoo staff ran, rode, sailed or swam to the finish in Dierenpark Amersfoort. Across land and water, just like amphibians. At the finish, the amount raised per institution was added on a cheque. This cheque, with a total amount of €57.466, was handed over to "Kikker" (Frog) a well-known character created by Max Velthuis a Dutch artist and writer.
