    Helping toads!
"Each year, thousands of amphibians in Southern Pfalz (Germany) thank their life to nature conservationists", says Ingeborg Keller of the Naturerlebnisschule ("Experience Nature School") of the Naturschutzbundes (NABU) Landau. Thirty-six school children of the Thomas-Nast school are listening to the teacher. They have gathered near the Zoo Landau, to find out how they can help save amphibians.

One week earlier, the children were in the Landau Zoo education facility to learn all about amphibians, their behaviour and environment. This is the first time that Zoo Landau works together with NABU to enable the children to experience what they can do to contribute to the conservation of amphibians.

In the field, the children learn that amphibians often have to cross roads to reach their breeding pools, of course without taking care of passing traffic. To make sure that the toad's journey to their breeding grounds does not end badly, people have to help. The children are shown barriers, that prevent the toads from crossing, and buckets that are dug in the ground to collect the toads. In these buckets the toads are carried to the pools across the road by the "toad savers". During recent days over 150 toads were carried across the road.

The combination of lessons in the and assisting in the toad crossing has been a big success. Following this first cooperation, Zoo Landau is planning more joint activities with NABU.
