'Frog Day' in Zoom Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen
In May a 'Frog Day' was held at Zoom Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen, with lots of activities, information, shows, games and edutainment especially for children. As usual the zoo made its own posters that were placed at the most visited area of the zoo: the Info Point. The zoo does not have amphibians in its animal collection, but several species occur naturally in pools and moats on the zoo grounds. On Frog Day a frog and a salamander were caught for some practical demonstration purposes. They will be placed back into their ponds after the event, of course.
Even in the pools of the polar bears a small population of Triturus vulgaris and Triturus cristatus is present - a natural 'mixed species exhibit' supported by the fact that the zoo has a biofilter system to clean the water.
Moreover an old wetland area is located at the border of the zoo, parts of it are inside and others outside the zoo. Later this summer some renaturalisation work will be done here to improve it for local amphibian species.
