Children's day at Zoo Decin: frogs should get a green light
On Saturday 24 May a special event was organised at Zoo Decín. A frog carnival was organised and every visitor with a frog mask received a 50% discount on the price of the entrance ticket. Furthermore the winners of a PowerPoint presentation competition 'Amphibian alarm (Žáby bijí na poplach - in Czech)' were awarded. The visitors service team organised some competitions, for example with amphibian puzzles, amphibian diets (children had to find and recognize some amphibian diets from pictures), recognising poisonous amphibians and amphibian predators, shooting at a picture of fly with a frog tongue etc. At the end of the day we made a photo of a group of children with amphibian masks, made during a special workshop. To support this event, some additional activities took place in the zoo: here was live music, a theatre for children, a performance with giant bubbles, horse riding and competitions by volunteer fire fighters.
At the amphibian exhibition the movie 'Frog spring' is displayed. The movie was produced by Václav Šena who is interested in nature and its conservation. The movie takes about 16 minutes and is about protecting amphibians from traffic. First, the movie provides some basic facts about amphibians (e.g. life cycle, mating and reproduction), which is followed by information about migration and mortality caused by traffic. Finally there is the most important part about conservation efforts, where volunteers and employees from nature reserves are setting up drift fences with bucket traps along roads and every day (during the migration season) carry captured amphibians across roads.
