Local amphibian exhibition at Cologne Zoo
In February 2008, Cologne Zoo started an exhibition on local amphibian species. Living animals of nine local species, from the common tree frog (Hyla arborea) to the common toad (Bufo bufo), are exhibited. The animals show the way of amphibian life as well as the threats to their survival and possibilities to protect
them.
Together with the local group 'NABU', a conservation project for amphibians was started in Nüssenberger Busch situated north of Cologne. Together with volunteers of the zoo and NABU an amphibian pond of 200 m² was restored. Further conservation activities in the area will follow.
On 12 February and 15 April teachers were trained in the zoo and were shown how amphibians can matter at school. Volunteers of the zoo offer an 'amphibian ambassador programme' and visit schools with living animals.
On 2 March a frog day was celebrated at the zoo, with several information stands and activities about frogs and Co. Further frog days will follow on 13 July and 21 September 2008.
