EAZA Academy

EAZA is committed to enhancing the professionalism of its member institutions through training opportunities and has been running courses in breeding programme management since the mid 1990's.  Because EAZA's breeding programmes are essential to ensuring that we have sustainable populations of species kept in zoos, including endangered species and species that are important for educational purposes, this area was the obvious one to start with.   Each year the EAZA Academy organises successful training courses to help improve the running of our more than 340 breeding programmes. These courses offer an opportunity for those coordinating the EEPs (European Endangered species Programmes) and keepers of ESBs (European Studbooks) to gain a deeper understanding of the genetics and demographics of the breeding programmes.  Thanks to a generous donation from Fondation Segré in 2010 a Training Officer was appointed to help expand the range of courses on offer.  A training needs survey was carried out amongst the membership and there was an overwhelmingly positive response. Now the EAZA Academy offers a wide range of courses aimed at all sectors of the zoo and aquarium community; from keepers to curators and educators to horticulturalists. Fondation Segré Fondation Segré offers financial support to partner organisations concerned with the conservation of nature and with education. Projects are developed jointly with the partners to set the terms and conditions and the time horizon, which can extend over more than one year. Fondation Segré generously provided the initial financing of the Academy and remains keenly interested in its future.
