One of the objectives of EAZA, as set out in its constitution, is "to promote scientific study". Keeping in mind the central place of conservation in all EAZA activities, this objective is interpreted in two ways:

EAZA wants to assist its membership in increasing the effectiveness of zoo and aquarium research by furthering information exchange and by coordinating research efforts; and
EAZA wants to promote the potential conservation value of zoo and aquarium research among authorities, universities and conservation bodies.

Zoos, aquariums and their partners are developing as one of the most substantial sources of scientific knowledge and activity, for the ultimate benefit of the survival of biodiversity, individual species and natural ecosystems.

Many aspects of the biology of wild animals simply cannot be studied efficiently in their original habitats, especially when the status of many populations and species is in decline and individual animals may only rarely be seen.

Research Committee & Research Strategy

Through its Research Committee, EAZA promotes, monitors, evaluates, benchmarks and guides research and establishes and supports regional networks of expert zoo, aquarium, university, museum and wildlife researchers. The EAZA Research Strategy sets out a clear and purposeful research vision and mission. It establishes primary goals and a detailed action plan with objectives that are specific, measurable, realistic and time-bound. Zoo research is set in the well-established and documented framework of ethics and obligations provided by the European Union Zoos Directive, the Convention on Biodiversity, and the IUCN. Also considered in the Strategy are important areas for research and development including veterinary care, legal, social and environmental issues, funding, outreach and the public understanding of science, education and technology.
